The Collapse of Complex Business Models

Maya Collapse

I highly recommend this article whether you work in an industry (i.e. Media) or live in a country (i.e. USA) collapsing under overly complex systems. The best quote I believe is the last paragraph.

When ecosystems change and inflexible institutions collapse, their members disperse, abandoning old beliefs, trying new things, making their living in different ways than they used to. It’s easy to see the ways in which collapse to simplicity wrecks the glories of old. But there is one compensating advantage for the people who escape the old system: when the ecosystem stops rewarding complexity, it is the people who figure out how to work simply in the present, rather than the people who mastered the complexities of the past, who get to say what happens in the future.

Life Lessons: How to open a Beer with another Beer

It’s a handy trick to break out, especially in the midst of a Super Bowl party (when you don’t want to miss a crucial play) or any event where you’re reluctant to leave your seat to hunt for an opener.

Computer geeks taught to flirt

Even the most quirky of computer nerds can learn to flirt with finesse thanks to a new “flirting course” being offered to budding IT engineers at Potsdam University south of Berlin.

The 440 students enrolled in the master’s degree course will learn how to write flirtatious text messages and emails, impress people at parties and cope with rejection.

Philip von Senftleben, an author and radio presenter who will teach the course, summed up his job as teaching how to “get someone else’s heart beating fast while yours stays calm.”

The course, which starts next Monday, is part of the social skills section of the IT course and is designed to ease entry into the world of work. Students also learn body language, public-speaking, stress management and presentation skills.

“We want to prepare our students with the social skills needed to succeed both in their private life and their work life,” said Hans-Joachim Allgaier, a spokesman for the institute at Potsdam University where the course is being offered.

Enjoy the Coffee – Not The Cup

from The Thoughts of a Dying Man blogHappy Coffee

A group of graduates, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. *

*Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups – porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite – telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee, the professor said: ‘If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the simple and cheap ones.

While it is normal for you to want only the best
for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases, it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. *

*What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups… Then you began eyeing each other’s cups.’

Now consider this, said the professor, ‘Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of Life we live. Sometimes, by concentrating on the cup, we fail to
enjoy the coffee God has provided us. Enjoy your coffee!’

The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. Four things to take note of in life…

1. Live simply.
2. Love generously.
3. Care deeply.
4. Speak kindly.

So don’t waste time drinking crap coffee (or beer). Drink the good stuff. Cheers !!
